Top Trending Houseplants For 2022
The experts have weighed in on the top trending houseplants for 2022.
With us ringing in the new year and going into another year of planty potential, I decided to do another houseplant trend prediction post for 2022. After reading several articles on what the experts are thinking will be the next “it” plant, I took a tally of what plants showed up the most and summed it up into one article.
These are 5 houseplants that were constantly repeated in the experts prediction. I’ll also go over what I think of the choices, being someone in the plant community. I’ll also give my predictions at the end as well on what plant or plants I think will make a serious comeback.
Satin Scindapsus
The Scindapsus species have been on the rise for a while now. They really started to pop up more toward the middle of 2021. Which makes sense this being one of the most predicted plants popping up on many articles.
Satin Scindapsus’s is really more of a category of Scindapsus’s, rather than an actual plant. Most commonly are the Silvery Ann, Exotica, Silver Lady, and Jade Satin. Really any Scindapsus that has a well, satin like feel to the leaves.
Scindapsus’s are fairly easy to care for houseplants and are some of the most beautiful trailing plants to add to any collection (and I low-key want to collect them all).
Monstera Siltepecana
Monstera’s are not going anywhere in 2022. More specifically the Monstera Siltepecana, or the ‘Silver Leaf Monstera’ is a newcomer on the list. This Monstera has a silvery hue to it and has elongated foliage much like the Cebu Blue Pothos.
Unlike the Cebu Blue, this Monstera has silvery leaves that have dark green veins weaving though the leaf. Like many Monsteras this plant can either climb or trail, making this plant another versatile piece when it comes to placement and styling.
This is definitely a houseplant that I can see popping up all over plant Instagram’s throughout the year.
*BRB adding this to my chart
Philodendron Micans
This velvety houseplant will NOT QUIT. This Micans have been on the top trending houseplants list for a long time.
You can understand why when you feel just how soft and fuzzy these leaves can get. The range of colors that this plant pops out is just magical. From dark reds to moody greens to burnt orange this houseplant will give you all the fall vibes all year long.
The Micans are also very easy to care for and are another plant that can either climb up a moss pole or trail in a leafy curtain.
Ficus Umbellata
Move over Fiddle Leaf Fig, there’s a new big leafy boy in town.
You may have never heard of the Ficus Umbellata, and neither have I, but this was by far the most popped up plant in every. single. article. I read for the top trending houseplants of 2022. This plant is predicted to be the #1 houseplant of 2022.
This Ficus has bright green rippled heart shaped leaves and grows like a tree. The look kind of resembles some kind of vegetable plant that I can put my finger on (maybe a squash?).
If this trendy houseplant is anything like its cousin, the Fiddle Leaf Fig, I may want to avoid the heartbreak.
Ferns
Nobody got too specific with this one and generally said that ferns will be on the rise in 2022.
Ferns have had kind of a bad reputation as like, maybe your grandma’s houseplant since they were most popular in the 80’s and 90’s. I will say that there are numerous types of ferns out there that can complement any style, but ferns aren’t for the beginner houseplant parent.
These leafy houseplants also have been known to be picky. This species tends to like more than the average home humidity and frequent watering, so if you’re someone who likes to water less often and don’t want to mess with a humidifier, I’d stay clear away of the fern. But, if you’re up for a little challenge a fern will test your patience.
My Prediction
Being someone in the houseplant community I thought I’d weigh in on what plant I thought would be gaining popularity in 2022.
My pick is: Air Plants
Air Plants have kind of fizzled out in the past few years, but I’ve been seeing more and more popping up on my Instagram feed. How could this not be a plant on the rise with it being one of the easiest plants to care for and the décor aspects are endless.
Also they are super affordable.
New Year, New Me – New Plants
In 2021 I posted an article just like this one and for 90% of the picks that experts were saying will be the plants to buy, I was a little dumbfounded. Although I did see all the plants I had mentioned in that article, I don’t think really any of those plants were exploding in 2021.
The top trending houseplants in 2022, though. Maybe.
I can actually see more of these houseplants becoming popular this year and hope to get a few of these added to my collection.
