Best Houseplants For Your Desk Or Office
Whether you’re stuck in a cubicle or trying to make your work from home office feel more productive, houseplants are great staples in office décor.
Houseplants have many benefits in an office, they increase productivity, boost serotonin levels while reducing stress, and just make your space feel more buttoned up and your own. Having plants in an office can also make it feel more inviting, which is why the offices with natural surroundings often get more applicants that those who don’t. Simply put we all want to be surrounded by nature.
Since 2020, a lot of our office spaces look a little different. Adding a plant into your work from home office can help you stay focused, which can be critical with your couch within a few feet from you. Creating a biophilic workspace in your home can help want to stay at your desk and finish up your work.
But at the end of the day, you’re busy and may not want to have another task to do while working. These are going to be the best and easiest houseplants for your desk or office, so you can have the benefits of the plant without all the stress- because I’m sure you have enough of it.
Chinese Evergreen
This ideal office plant is such a crowd pleaser. Not only does this houseplant come in many different varieties that will fit any office décor, but it is also one of the easiest plants on this list.
You may look at this plant and think it looks like it would need special care, like most tropical plants would. But not this guy. You can keep this plant in lower light, but it does prefer medium light. If your office space doesn’t have any natural light, consider getting a grow light for your plant that can run at night.
Chinese evergreens can get quite large, so this would be the perfect office plant to sit on the floor, if you have the space.
Pothos
Pothos are beautiful trailing (or climbing) plants that are on everyone’s “easy houseplants list” that’s why it’s one of the best houseplants for your desk or office. This plant also comes in many different varieties like the variegated marble/snow queen or the lush emerald Jade Pothos.
No need to worry about these plants because they are very forgiving and pretty doubt tolerant. They will appear a little droopy and limp when needing a watering, but after a good drink in no time they’ll perk back up and back to its old self. Pothos also can do ok in lower light settings, but expect smaller growth.
Placing these on a shelf or a hanging planter and having them trail will give you that urban jungle vibe that almost makes you forget you’re in the office.
Hoya (Wax Plant)
If you can’t get enough of the trailing plants look no further than the Hoya. Hoya’s, like the Pothos are ok with a little neglect. These can be super forgiving when it comes to watering, so much that I almost forget mine.
These will need a bit lighter home than the Pothos, though. Hoyas like more of a medium bright light, but grow lights work well, also.
A Hoya will also look amazing up on a bookcase or a hanging planter. Letting these trail down will give you all the planty vibes.
Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant)
Ka-ching! This Pilea is the ideal desk plant, due to the compactness. These can stay relatively small which can be tucked away anywhere on your desk.
Taking care of this houseplant is – yet again, very easy! Watering only once a week, or when the top ½ of soil is dry. They do need a tiny bit more light than low light. Make sure they get medium bright light, so next to a window would be ideal. If a window is out of reach you can also opt into getting grow lights.
The Chinese Money Plant got its name from the coin like foliage this plant has. It has been said that these plants bring good luck and fortune, so maybe if you’re looking for that raise, get a Money Plant.
Parlor Palm
Want a to make your office or desk feel like you’re going on a getaway, but don’t have any vacation time saved up? Get a Parlor Palm!
These palms often come in smaller sizes, which are perfect for a desk. They do pretty well in lower to medium light settings and don’t need to be watered super often.
Parlor Palms will make a statement on your desk and help you keep going and work harder so you can afford that vacation to Mexico.
Working For The Weekend
Once the workday is over, we can’t wait to unwind and relax at home or outside. Bringing in some nature will help motivate you and help keep that calm that we all have experienced from time to time.
Having houseplants for your desk or office will also give you an excuse to step away from your desk for a moment and tend to your plant. Connecting to nature and taking breaks is important to our mental health.
So, if you feel like your office needs a little life, go get yourself a new planty co-worker.
