Styling A Home With Indoor Plants

There’s no secret that houseplants have been taking over homes for centuries. Most homes today have houseplants with more than half of the population in the US having at least one houseplant in their homes. Since plants are in so many homes you might be wondering how to style them or even naturally integrate them into your already styled decor.

Aesthetics are very important to me when I style my home with plants. I want to make sure that the plant will not only be in a spot that it will thrive in, but also incorporated into my home décor style.

There are many ways to style indoor plants – I’m going to go over a few tips when it comes to styling houseplants in your home, so you can take your houseplants to the next level.

The Right Location

Of course, you want your plants to thrive in your home.

Nothing is worse for feng shui than a dying plant. Make sure your home can accommodate your plants needs. Plants need specific lighting, temperature and even at times, humidity. These things are something to keep in mind before you think about styling that houseplant in your home.

When I’m shopping for a plant, I always try to think about where it might live and if it will thrive in the place I’m envisioning. Doing research before buying a plant will give you a little piece of mind in the long run.

Tip: If lighting is an issue, you can get a lamp that matches your style and replace the bulb with a grow light bulb.

Displaying At All Heights

You want to give a visual interest to your plants by displaying them at different heights.

Taller plants, like a Fiddle Leaf Fig will most likely remain on ground level. Simply placing the planter on the floor or even getting plant stand for a small lift will be perfect for large plants. If you have a couple taller plants you can arrange them in a group alternating the heights.

Tip: When styling indoor plants or any décor for that matter – arrange your objects in a visual triangle. An upright triangle has the tallest object in the middle and an upside-down triangle will have the taller objects on the sides.

You can play with smaller/medium plants a little more. These houseplants can either be hung on a wall, in a hanging planter, on a windowsill, and even on a shelf.

Shelf (or surface) styling is one of my favorite methods when styling houseplants in your home – especially if you have a few to style. Staggering your plants on a shelf will give it so much dimension. This is great for trailing plants, like a Pothos.

Adding accents around your plants on a surface will elevate your shelf styling. You can display plants on or around books, arrange accents like candles (but not too close), sculptures/statues, picture frames and so much more.

Never Underestimate A Planter

A good planter to a plant is like a good outfit to the plant parent.

Figuring out your homes color scheme or a type of décor style will make it easy to find planters that will fit right in. Planters come in all shapes and sizes to complement your plants and your home décor. Searching for new planters that exactly match your style or even adding one that will pop is lot of fun.

My home décor style is a little bit of mid-century modern and a dash of boho. I have a neutral color scheme that I stick with, more specifically – all white planters.

I also like to play around with planter designs vs plant foliage. When I get a plant that has a “basic” leaf, I may want to get a planter with more design to it, verses a plant that has a lot of texture or color in the foliage, I’d get a simpler looking planter.

How To Pick The Right Pot For Your Plant

Playing With Different Varieties

Just like planters, plants come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Styling houseplants that have different foliage types can add some interest into the look.

Placing a plant with a striper foliage or with some variegation, next to a planer plant will heighten the appeal of both plants. Doing this, they will complement each other and not clash, like if you had busy looking foliage plants all in the same area.

Houseplants are home décor accents, and you don’t want to all look the same.

Less Is More/Statement Plants

Now I can’t say this for myself because I live in a home jungle. But having a few plants can add some interest into your décor, without being overwhelming.

This is a more minimalist type of styling but adding the right plant into a space can give it that pop of color or life that the room may need. If you have a larger spot to fill in a room, a large statement plant like a palm tree is going to make your aesthetic completely change.

You don’t need to fill a home with plants to give your home a planty vibe.

Aesthetically Planty

Styling a home with indoor plants is fun and easy to do. The best tip I can give you is to play around with different locations and styles until you find one that works.
